If You Need Further Tests
For less than 1 in 10 women, further tests will be needed after a screening mammogram - this is called assessment. Find out more about assessment after breast screening.
What is Assessment?
In certain cases (less than 1 in 10), your results letter will ask you to come back to our assessment clinic. Rest assured that this does not mean breast cancer has been found.
Instead, it means that the doctors who reviewed your breast x-rays identified something that needs a closer look - at this stage, more tests are needed to check whether this is normal, or is due to cancer.
These further tests are called assessment.
What Should I Do Next?
Your letter will ask you to call BreastScreen NSW on 13 20 50 – it’s a good idea to do this as soon as possible so we can discuss your assessment appointment with you.
When you call us, we’ll let you know:
- Where you need to go for your assessment – this may be not be at the same place you had your screening mammogram
- When your assessment will take place. Your assessment will be held as soon as possible after your screening mammogram.
After this, you’ll receive a letter outlining the next steps.

Do I have to pay for my assessment?
No. If we’ve asked you to come for assessment after your screening mammogram, your tests are free of charge.
