Mammographer at BreastScreen NSW Albury
Aside from being a Nanna and a Mum, Rossi Jarvie’s other rewarding job is being a Mammographer. Having received a breast cancer diagnosis when her son was 16, Rossi brings both emotional insight and empathy to her clinical role, working to detect cancers early, before they can be seen or felt.
“I wasn’t expecting to have cancer, so it really rocked me and took the wind out of my sails.
My son was pretty shattered, but after chemo, radiation, surgery and medication, I was okay, and I’ve been clear since.”
Rossi started with BreastScreen NSW travelling with the mobile screening van, providing mammograms for country women who were consistently grateful for the service.
“Most people who come to BreastScreen NSW every two years for a mammogram will have a normal result, but when they don’t, I understand what they are going through.
I try to sit and listen and offer whatever emotional support I can, with a caring heart.
When my doctor gave me the diagnosis, I was a mess, and he said, ‘This will be the worst day of your life and it will just get better from here’.
That proved to be very true. Now my focus is on enjoying my family and providing ladies who come for a breast screen the very best of care.”
