International Day of People with Disability

Published on 03/12/2024

On International Day of People with Disability, we recognise the diverse needs of women in our community and acknowledge the dedicated health workers and carers who ensure that those with special needs can access this important service.

Meet Suzie

Suzie is 68 years old and lives in a group care home in Maitland. She has a big heart, a cheeky sense of humour and adores her large family, especially her great nieces and nephews. Suzie enjoys visiting the hydrotherapy pool with her friends and bantering with the staff. She loves using her Polaroid camera and capturing moments of her friends and carers being silly or dancing.

Ever since Suzie turned 50, she has been visiting BreastScreen NSW with her health worker. Suzie requires a walker and sometimes uses a wheelchair, she is able to stand for her mammogram. Our staff assist her in getting into position and she holds onto the mammogram machine for support. While Suzie says the mammogram is a bit uncomfortable, she finds it manageable.

Most of our clinics and vans are wheelchair accessible, and we offer longer appointments to accommodate different needs. If you or someone you know is a woman with a disability or special need, speak to our staff on 13 20 50 when you make an appointment. A range of support is available, find out more here.
