NSW Women’s Week 2025 is here, with a series of events that celebrate inclusivity and highlight the achievements of women across the state. In recognition of this, we want to acknowledge the incredible work of all our female staff who contribute to BreastScreen NSW. Brittany Fitzalen shares her experience and insights as a radiographer with our South West Sydney service.
I've been part of the BreastScreen NSW team for over two years now, and it's been a rewarding journey.
My initial fascination with radiography stemmed from an interest in anatomy and the appearance of x-rays. Starting out as a general radiographer, I soon discovered the field of breast imaging and decided to specialise in this area.
"It's satisfying to witness the transformation of someone who was initially anxious about their first mammogram, leaving the room feeling reassured and positive about their experience."
A typical day for me involves greeting clients, guiding them through the mammogram process, and working with them to ensure we capture the highest quality breast images. It's satisfying to witness the transformation of someone who was initially anxious about their first mammogram, leaving the room feeling reassured and positive about their experience.

Working for this program has been very fulfilling, largely because of the wonderful clients and colleagues I get to meet. The team here is so friendly and caring, and I truly believe in the impact our service has on improving women's health.
Before joining BreastScreen NSW, I wasn't aware that the lifetime risk of breast cancer in NSW women was as high as 1 in 7. This makes having a mammogram such an important check to have done. The process is quick, with the compression lasting around five seconds for each image. While there might be a bit of discomfort, the peace of mind it provides and the lives it saves make it all worthwhile.
